  32. Try rendering your animation without the heat waves first, so that you 
  33. have an image sequence on disk....then map this image sequence to a flat 
  34. plane that will fill the screen...use 100% luminosity and 0% diffusity to 
  35. avoid any color changes.  Put another flat plane directly in front of the 
  36. first(offset by a small amount)...make this plane totally transparent 
  37. with a decent amount of refraction and then use a moving Fractal Noise 
  38. texture as a bump map to give the rippling effect.  You'll need to play 
  39. around with the Fractal Noise settings to get the desired effect, but this 
  40. will definitely work and it will cut your render times way down without 
  41. screwing up the rest of the animation when you turn on Trace Refraction.
